Mothers Day Dinner

I’ve written about eating dinner together as an extended family before and I probably will again. But this is something I think we have begun to dismiss or take for granted as a people. Eating together as a family is a wonderful thing, eating together as an extended family, even more wonderful.

On Mothers Day my kids and my sister took a poll of the mothers in the family of their favorite foods, and with a delicate hand chose something from each persons list and put together a dinner from the results. It was a delicious meal of twice baked potatoes, London broil, fruit salad and home baked rolls, with a delicious chocolate cake for dessert. They all worked together so it wasn’t an effort that killed anyone, yet it reeked of love and

Potty Training

For a new mom the words potty training can be almost as scary as “saving for college”. Potty training has a million horror stories, a million ideas, a million ways to go wrong. But here are some tried and true methods for your consideration.

First, as in every other aspect of parenting, routine, consistency and follow through are the most important things.

Second, realize that it’s not going to happen in a day or even two. Be prepared to have a least a week where you are fairly sure of

Big time cheating pickled eggs

I'm putting a recipe in the recipe box for Grandma Hardy's pickled eggs. But if you have time and aren't in a hurry here is the way you pickle eggs with no recipe, hardly any effort or time.

When you have emptied a jar of your favorite pickles, estimate how many boiled eggs you can fit into the jar when pressing them in firmly. Boil that many eggs to a hard boiled stage and then cool and peel them. Push the eggs into the jar, packing them firmly but not to the point of mashing them. You may

Getting to know you

This last weekend we had our entire family together for the first time in about 10 months. That may not seem like a lot to some, but to me it was a very long time, especially when it had been that long since I had seen our now 2 year old grand daughter and I had never met her almost 3 month old sister. But for 4 days we were all together and it was wonderful. We had time to get to know one another a bit and learn each others rhythms and share stories.

One of my favorite things about the

The Clark County Fair and Rodeo

About 30 years ago, our little valley started up a fair. It was a place where the 4H kids could show their animals, local people could sell their baked goods and hand made items to other local people, a tiny carnival would come and the kids would get all excited about the 3 or 4 rides available. The entire valley would shut down including the main street through town, cars would line the streets, and beanbag games and sack races would become a life or death competition. For that one day we all

The power of the magic blankie

Once upon a time there was a young princess named Brooke. She was cute, and sweet, and brought joy to all who knew her. She had the power to bring a smile to everyone, even the old king that lived next door, who sometimes found it hard to smile. Brooke was well cared for, well loved, and yes, indulged by those who knew her best. But Brooke had a powerful tool, a magic tool, something that could not only make her smile, but could heal all wounds, and this tool belonged to her alone.

When Brooke
