Dutch Oven Basics

Anything you can fry, bake or boil can be made in a Dutch Oven. The biggest advantage is a little slower pace, so while dinner is cooking, visit with family and friends and make your meal an event instead of a hurried chow hall experience. A few sacks of briquettes and a couple of Dutch Ovens and you not only have a great camping meal, but you have dinner for family night, dinner when the power goes out, dinner in an emergency situation. Take the lid off and turn it upside down and you have a griddle for your eggs and bacon. Don’t want to use briquettes tonight? Use your Dutch Oven in your home oven, just as yummy.

Dutch Ovens are made of heavy cast iron, with a heavy lid they act a lot like a pressure cooker, cutting down cooking time

So glad I married him!

Last week we had our 4th grandchild, another baby girl. She’s tiny and squeaks and loves to be held. She came a little earlier than we hoped, but mom and baby are doing well. Babies are a blessing, especially when they are wanted and born into a loving family that will give them every chance at a good life. But, with sentimentality just dripping off of me, let me tell you what touches me the most about these additions to our family…..watching my husband with them. This man has always been a

Instructions for the Ideal Steam Canner

I love my steam canner! It’s an old one my mom had and I have used and used it and have loaned it out numerous times. However….I am constantly losing the instructions or I don’t get them back when I loan it out. So with that in mind I’m copying the instructions here. If it’s helpful to you, to learn or use a steam canner, great! But mostly this is so I’ll always be able to find my instructions!! There are canning recipes in the recipe box for which I have used the steam canner, it’s very

Using Powdered Milk

Storing milk is impossible! You can store canned milk if you rotate it regularly. There are some seriously pasteurized milk products that can be stored on your pantry shelf for up to a year, but they aren’t available every where, so for long term storage powdered milk is really the only way to go. On top of which foods made with powdered milk will have fewer calories and less cholesterol than those made from whole milk. So….bonus!

With that in mind, here are some great ideas for using your

Learning to cook, Part 1

I've decided it's time to be a grown-up.  Part of being a grown-up is learning to cook.  I am a horrible cook.  It seems that no matter how many times I double and triple check my self I always do something wrong.  but in my house we have the "P" word.  Practice.  Nothing in life comes easy but with practice they can be made better. So I will be documenting my experiences with cooking.  My trials, my mess-ups, my discoveries, and hopefully my
